Your child’s junior year is coming to an end. Your child is planning to continue his or her studies after the baccalaureate in an Anglo-Saxon curriculum and you are targeting universities in the United Kingdom.

The prestigious QS World University Rankings 2020 has just been published and once again this year, English universities are at the top of the rankings.

With four universities in the world’s Top 10 and 18 in the Top 100, the excellent reputation of Anglo-Saxon universities is confirmed.

However, applying to these universities is not something that can be improvised if you want to give yourself every chance of gaining access to them.
High selectivity on entry

Indeed, the selection is important, even very important, depending on the universities and training courses and it is necessary to be able to differentiate oneself in one’s application in order to attract the attention of the universities.

Predictive marks for the baccalaureate,
the letter of recommendation, and
the cover letter called Personal Statement,
are the essential elements on which universities will base their selection.

Your child’s file will necessarily compete with other files of the same academic level. It is therefore the motivation letter that will make the difference.

The need to strengthen your application and to stand out from the crowd

Depending on his or her personal background and choice of training, it may be necessary to reinforce his or her candidacy this summer with practical experience or volunteer work. These will enable the Personal Statement to better highlight the applicant’s interest in the subject and the qualities of the applicant in relation to the training in question.

In addition, specific requirements such as a portfolio or examination may be required in the application procedure depending on the training courses or universities concerned.

The last long holidays before the start of the Terminale school year are the right time to do these internships or volunteer activities and prepare for exams.

It is also a last good opportunity for high school students who are following the French Baccalaureate curriculum, to work on their English if necessary and to take the English exams recognised by the universities (IELTS, TOEFL, Cambridge Advanced or Proficiency …).

Selecting the course and the university that best meets your criteria

Universities in the UK offer a wide range of courses and it is therefore important to start research and analysis now. The aim is to first identify the courses that interest your child and the universities that offer them.

What type of course will be suitable for your child?

Specialized training from the start
or more generalist with a large choice of options during the course of the course,
a double curriculum,
a training course that includes a so-called “abroad” year at a partner university or a professional internship?

For equivalent training, the university rankings published each year can be an aid to decision-making. However, they must be handled with care and the criteria used by them must be taken into account.

In addition, the campus and the environment are also criteria to be taken into account, as your child will be living there for several years and it is therefore essential that he or she feels comfortable there.

There is nothing better to do this than to go to the Open Days. This is an opportunity to get a personal impression of the living and studying environment and to confirm your choice of education.

Refine your project as you go along during the summer to come up with a short list of universities and training courses, and at the start of the new school year you will be able to organise yourself to visit the selection of universities at the top of your list. Many universities organise Open Days in September.
