Manchester is a town dynamic where academia meets wealth cultural. To give us an insight into student life at’University of Manchester, we spoke with Olivia, who has just completed their first year of Bachelor of Science (BSc) in Management (Marketing).
As a little background, Olivia double-breasted nationality French and British and obtained her French Baccalauréat with specialisms in SES (Economic and Social Sciences) and HGGSP (History, Geography, Geopolitics and Political Science). Its IGCSE (International General Certificate of Secondary Education) enrich as well as his academic background.
Studying management at the University of Manchester

We asked Olivia if the course met her expectations and she confirmed that it did, mentioning that « the teachers are very good and the course content is interesting »She specified to us that the wide range of subjects covered in the first year makes it easier to choose the specialisation in the second year.
Meet the challenges of the course
One of the unexpected challenges Olivia faced was the level of mathematics required for her course. She indicated that it would be beneficial to have a deeper understanding of mathematics than just the required IGCSE level. She considered it essential to undertake a substantial amount of work additional, but added that «the teachers are very nice and can help us».
With 15 to 16 hours of seminar classes and of lectures per week, combined with a similar amount of’self-directed learning, time management is essential. Olivia insists that a meticulous note-taking throughout the year and the completion of all required readings are essential for passing the end-of-year exams.
Beyond the lecture theatres
L’University of Manchester offers a kaleidoscope of opportunities beyond the academic sphere. With a myriad of companies to explore for extra-curricular activities. Olivia decided not to join too many societies during her first year as she wanted to settle in. She chose to join Running and French, where she is keen to use her French skills to be able to teach it during her second year and hopes to join the Dance company soon.
