The Italian university system is structured mainly around public and private universities. The first cycle of studies, equivalent to the French licence, is called the Laurea Triennale and generally lasts for three years.

For the 2026-2027 academic year, private tuition fees are around €20,000 per year, subject to the submission of the ISEE Parificato. Without this indicator (as is the case for certain international students), universities apply a fixed rate to be checked on a case-by-case basis. In private universities, fees generally range between €5,000 and €25,000 per year.
The cost of living varies significantly depending on the city chosen. You should allow for a monthly budget of €1,200 to €1,600 in Milan, and €1,000 to €1,400 in Rome.
Regarding administrative procedures, EU citizen students do not need a visa, but must register at the Questura (police headquarters) within eight days of their arrival. For non-EU students, a Type D visa is required, which entails proving sufficient financial resources (around €6,000 per year) and health insurance. Visa processing times vary from one to three weeks. Once there, these students must apply for their *Permesso di Soggiorno* (residence permit) within eight working days. It should be noted that non-European students are permitted to work up to 20 hours a week.

Bocconi and Luiss Guido Carli are two leading Italian private universities, particularly well known in economics, management, political science and law. For the 2026-2027 academic year, the tuition fees for a Bachelor's degree at Bocconi amount to €17,000 a year for an initial enrolment, excluding any additional fees. At Luiss, the annual amount for the first year is 14 000 €, to which is added the regional tax for the right to education; this fee is split into three instalments. These amounts constitute a significant investment, to be factored into the family budget in addition to accommodation and living expenses in Milan or Rome. However, partial exemption schemes and scholarships may be offered by institutions depending on the academic profile and financial situation of the student; their availability and conditions change from one year to the next.
After gaining their Bachelor's degree, your child has the opportunity to remain in Italy for a maximum period of 12 months to look for work and launch their career.
Nevertheless, the majority of students continue with an international Master's degree.
