Access two prestigious universities in Italy with Expat Student: Bocconi and Luiss

Italy is home to several internationally recognised higher education institutions. At Expat Student, our application support for Italy focuses on two prestigious universities: Bocconi University in Milan and Luiss University in Rome.

Bocconi is particularly well-known internationally for its degree programmes in economics, management, finance, political science and data science. Its highly international environment and programmes taught in English make it a particularly attractive destination for students wishing to build an international career.

Based in Rome, Luiss also offers a resolutely international environment, with degree programmes focused in particular on economics, business, management, political science and international relations.

Both of these universities have their own admission criteria and procedures. Expat Student helps students understand these requirements, choose their course and prepare their application.

I highly recommend the services of Expat Student, who were able to support me with my UCAS applications, as well as those for international universities like Bocconi and in the United States.
Their support is reliable, of high quality, they do not hesitate to provide extra help and they are very understanding.
A good service to ensure success in university admissions.

Understand the country's higher education system

The Italian university system is structured mainly around public and private universities. The first cycle of studies, equivalent to the French licence, is called the Laurea Triennale and generally lasts for three years.

As part of studying in Italy, Expat Student specifically supports students wishing to apply to two prestigious private universities: Bocconi University in Milan and Luiss University in Rome.

Both of these institutions offer an international academic environment as well as several programmes taught in English. As admission procedures, academic criteria and application methods vary for each institution, it is essential to prepare your application well in advance.

How Expat Student supports you through your bachelor's degree

Expat Student’s support is tailored to ensure your child’s success and peace of mind. For Italy, our expertise focuses in particular on applications to Bocconi University and Luiss University.

Our approach begins with a personalised assessment to evaluate the student's profile, academic results, interests and goals. We then help them to identify, among the programmes offered by Bocconi and Luiss, those that best match their project.

Our team then supports the student in preparing and planning their application, taking into account the admission criteria and deadlines specific to the selected university and programme.

Finally, our support continues until the final choice in order to help the student and their family approach this new stage of their academic journey with peace of mind.

Bachelor's degree in Italy: Cost of living and expenses to expect on site, visas and procedures

For the 2026-2027 academic year, private tuition fees are around €20,000 per year, subject to the submission of the ISEE Parificato. Without this indicator (as is the case for certain international students), universities apply a fixed rate to be checked on a case-by-case basis. In private universities, fees generally range between €5,000 and €25,000 per year.

The cost of living

The cost of living varies significantly depending on the city chosen. You should allow for a monthly budget of €1,200 to €1,600 in Milan, and €1,000 to €1,400 in Rome.

Administrative procedures

Regarding administrative procedures, EU citizen students do not need a visa, but must register at the Questura (police headquarters) within eight days of their arrival. For non-EU students, a Type D visa is required, which entails proving sufficient financial resources (around €6,000 per year) and health insurance. Visa processing times vary from one to three weeks. Once there, these students must apply for their *Permesso di Soggiorno* (residence permit) within eight working days. It should be noted that non-European students are permitted to work up to 20 hours a week.

Prestigious universities in Italy

  • Bocconi University — Milan — 12th in the world and 4th in Europe in social sciences and management; ; 10th in the world in business and management (QS 2026). It is also 18th in the world in economics and econometrics.
  • Luiss Guido Carli — Rome — 23rd in the world in political science and international relations (QS); ; in the global top 100 in business and management, and No. 1 in Italy among large private universities in the 2026-2027 CENSIS ranking.

The questions parents ask themselves about a bachelor's degree in Italy

Not necessarily. Although a B2 level is generally required for courses taught in Italian, the range of programmes taught in English is growing strongly, with more than 500 programmes available.

Bocconi and Luiss mostly offer courses taught in English.

Bocconi and Luiss Guido Carli are two leading Italian private universities, particularly well known in economics, management, political science and law. For the 2026-2027 academic year, the tuition fees for a Bachelor's degree at Bocconi amount to €17,000 a year for an initial enrolment, excluding any additional fees. At Luiss, the annual amount for the first year is 14 000 €, to which is added the regional tax for the right to education; this fee is split into three instalments. These amounts constitute a significant investment, to be factored into the family budget in addition to accommodation and living expenses in Milan or Rome. However, partial exemption schemes and scholarships may be offered by institutions depending on the academic profile and financial situation of the student; their availability and conditions change from one year to the next.

This is the Italian residence permit. It is compulsory for all students who are nationals of countries outside the European Union and must be applied for within eight working days of arrival in Italy.

After gaining their Bachelor's degree, your child has the opportunity to remain in Italy for a maximum period of 12 months to look for work and launch their career.

Nevertheless, the majority of students continue with an international Master's degree.
