Brexit: what really changed
That's it, after many twists and turns, Brexit is officially done and dusted and new rules came into force on 1 January 2021.
Six points to understand what will change, or not, for those wishing to enrol in a bachelor's or master's degree in the United Kingdom from the next 2021/2022 academic year.
Brexit and students, what's not really going to change...
The appeal of UK universities
It is important to remember that even after leaving the European Union, the United Kingdom will remain a premier destination for European students looking for a solid Anglo-Saxon education at a renowned university – With 4 universities in the global top 10, the United Kingdom is located just behind the United States.
The value of the degree
Leaving the European Union indeed has no impact on what has been put in place at the level of the European Higher Education Area within the framework of the Bologna Process, with the widespread adoption of ECTS credits among the various member countries and the equivalence of degrees. Thus, a Bachelor's degree obtained in the UK will be still recognised in France for a Bachelor's degree level (3 years post-Baccalauréat) and will allow you to apply for a Master's degree in France, for example. On the other hand, regarding regulated professions, the situation is currently less clear.
The possibility of working to fund one's studies
As in the past, the student can have a job during their studies. With the new rules and their student visa, they can thus work up to 20 hours a week during term time and without any time limit during the holidays.
The possibility of staying on afterwards to work
This possibility remains open, under new conditions, to students following a Bachelor's or Master's degree course in the UK. They will thus be able to obtain a Graduate Visa at the end of their studies which will allow them to stay and work in the UK for an additional two years.
