Healthcare studies: what if there were other options than France?
Following the health studies reforms in France, we are noting an ever-increasing number of disappointed students who are unable to pursue the studies they want.
Indeed, many students who have ample capacity and willingness to pursue healthcare studies are unable, due to a lack of places, to continue into the second year in France.
We can also add to this population final-year high-school students who do not wish to go through the first year of medicine in France because of its difficulty due to this extreme selection.

Healthcare studies in Spain: the courses
Medicine
The medicine studies in Spain begin with six years of university studies leading to the «Grado en Medicina» degree. If the student subsequently wishes to continue their studies in Spain, they proceed with a specialisation cycle.
He also has the option of returning to continue his training in France through the ECN competitive examination (National Ranking Examination, which is evolving in 2024 to be called EDN – national computerized examinations, and ECOS – objective structured clinical examinations).
The’Cardenal Herrera Private University, located near Valencia, offers a medical training whose first-year courses are taught in English. Spanish classes are also planned to enable students to reach the level of Spanish required to continue their studies in Spanish from the third year onwards.
The application deadline at this training course takes place in the month of February. It is nevertheless necessary to start the process well in advance, as a scientific examination has to be taken. Indeed, candidates must pass the BMAT (BioMedical Admission Test) which is an international admissions test for medical studies widely used by universities in the United Kingdom and elsewhere in the world. This exam, designed to test thinking skills, the ability to apply scientific knowledge and communication skills, takes place online in the month of February and registration is done before the end of January. The test result carries significant weight in the candidate's dossier.
The’University of Navarra also propose a fMedical training in English and Spanish. On the other hand, as certain courses are delivered in Spanish from the first year, it is necessary to be able to provide proof of a B2 Spanish level at the time of application.
Dental Studies
There are a number of reputable private Spanish universities that offer a five-year dentistry degree course in Spain.
For some courses, only the first years are taught in English, while for others the entire course is in English. Even when classes are delivered in English, students must nevertheless learn Spanish with a view to patient contact during the clinical years.
Whether you are studying in Valencia, Barcelona, Madrid or elsewhere, you will find top-quality classes using the very latest equipment and techniques. L’European University offers this training course, for example, on its two Madrid and Valencia campuses.
Students are admitted after the Baccalauréat, selection being based on the overall average and grades in scientific subjects. Certain universities also require candidates to sit their own entrance exam in biology and chemistry. The candidate must also be able to provide proof of a B2 level in English.
Physiotherapy
Many French nationals also go to Spain to follow physiotherapy studies. The CEU Cardenal Herrera University Elche campus, for example, offers a four-year training course, the first year being in language French and in the following years Spanish.
The European Universities in Madrid and Valencia allow students to complete all four years of their courses entirely in French.
Note, however, that a Spanish level B2 according to the European language framework is required at the end of the first year to be able to undertake clinical placements in Spanish.
Pharmacy
For the studies of chemist's, you can also find courses starting in the English language in Spain as well.’CEU Cardenal Herrera University near Valence offers a five-year pharmacy degree, with 50% from the English-language course.
Veterinary surgeon
And to finish our overview, we mustn't forget the animals! It is also possible to’to go to Spain to study veterinary medicine, starting, there too, the training either in English or in French.
The bilingual course begins with intensive Spanish classes, before switching to the Spanish version for the third year of the five-year study programme.
